Almost Gone
SOLO's founder, Larry McKenna, has written a book about his beloved leatherbacks. Almost Gone is a true account of the plight of the Pacific Leatherback sea turtle, Dermochelys coriacea; the world’s largest turtle and marine reptile.

This book is NOT Fiction!
In the Jurassic period (about 150 million years ago), there were reported to be about 100 million of these “Gentle Giants” in the oceans. Now, particularly over the past 20 to 25 years, Gillnet and Longline fishing and the barbaric killings and egg poaching of these turtles on their nesting beaches have reduced the Pacific Ocean female nesting populations to less than 600 individuals. These beautiful creatures are now critically endangered, which means they are facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the immediate future. They will be gone forever.

Larry presents a candid exposure of the threats along with a details of the long standing actions and inaction by of international organizations, government agencies, NGO’s and countries which, collectively, are driving these “Gentle Giants of the Pacific” toward a very rapid extinction.
There are some “Good Guys” and lots of “Bad Guys” revealed in the book. Greed, money, political lies, inactions, lack of law enforcement clash with serious efforts for conservation at almost every turn by those attempting to save Leatherback turtles. The killing of leatherbacks at sea continues unabated every day.

Our Foundation Mission Statement:

To educate the public about the Pacific leatherback turtle and explain the rapid spiral toward extinction it faces
To inform as many people as possible of this pending sea tragedy so that more people may be informed and join in a series of democratic actions to help reverse this extinction danger; and
To facilitate a significant reversal in the population decline from the largest leatherback turtle nesting beaches in the Pacific, Irian Jaya, Indonesia, by increasing the number of hatchlings which hatch, make it to the sea, and return to nest; thereby providing longevity to the species.

The Long Way Back

Along with this new Blog Site, we are introducing a NEW Ballad about the plight of the Leatherback Sea Turtle; "The Long Way Back" (c). The gift of this Ballad created especially for the Leatherback Turtle and our Foundation was composed by Larry McKenna. (No.. not our Founding Director, Larry) The giver, Larry is a music composer of world acclaim and a Philadelphia music producer of 4 hit productions. The 2 Larry's met in Internet chats when their e-mails became crossed. From those chats, Larry, the Music Man, became a Volunteer and created this Ballad for us.)

The vocalist is Julie Opet, a Notre Dame graduate in Political Science and Arabic studies. She, post graduation, is now resuming her musical career. Julie received rave reviews for her lead role in the hit musical..."IF THE SHOE FITS."

As you listen to Julie sing the upbeat words Larry composed for the Leatherback Turtles, you may appreciate their donated talents to further our objectives of Reversing Extinction--- which we now KNOW can be done.
